Cougars
Pillow Talk
May 21, 2006 by Katie Sauro
Not exactly the whispering of sweet nothings, or any other form of pillow talk most of us would recognize, that’s for sure. New York-based octet Cougars draws comparison to Rocket from the Crypt, but the brash, gritty punk and the screaming-as-if-in-utter-pain vocals are more reminiscent of the long-defunct Murder City Devils and their ostentatious frontman Spencer Moody. But the two-piece horn section and the downplayed synths ensure that Cougars is not just another copy-cat (ha ha, get it?) Sub Pop wannabe. With their latest release on Go-Kart Records, Pillow Talk, the boys brazenly talk the talk and walk the walk, doing so quite loudly and quite innovatively, unabashedly bringing the most cowbell this side of “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” Quite an accomplishment, wouldn’t you say?
