Jane Gillman
List of Wishes
by Karla Ash
01.14.07

‘80s survivor Jane Gillman is a folk artist with a yen for country, but not your sister’s country. It’s really hard to place what country timeline to put Gillman in because she doesn’t have the torch-song croon of Patsy Cline, nor the stadium-filling boom of today’s Southern divas. Gillman’s voice has some sugar in it, but it’s never in your face. On “Angel of Dreams,” she sounds the prettiest, her vocals melodically in sync with the reflective keyboards, and she is downright playful on “My Impatient Heart,” the closest she comes in sounding as country as her music. Lyrically, Gillman can be compared to Suzanne Vega in how she is able to disguise her downbeat emotions with toe-tapping, guitar-based pop.
