Jenn August
Angels Here Among Us
by Karla Ash

The title may have some of you initially thinking that this is a Christian album, but that’s definitely not the case. Nevertheless, there is some soul-cleansing in here.
Angels Here Among Us is an album about freedom—letting go of bad childhood experiences and the sexist perceptions of males (“This Is What Men Like”), society’s teachings (“All the Wrong Reasons”), inner pain (“Trinities”), a failing relationship (“Separate Ways”). If life gives the best learning lessons, then Jenn August has been educated well. This is coffeehouse-flavored acoustic folk, a CD that you listen to during the Pacific Northwest’s numerous rainy-day afternoons. Despite the confrontational words of “This Is What Men Like” (the track that’ll most likely receive the most attention), this record is filled with love and affection, a celebration of sisterhood.
