Neumos – June 3, 2006
by Katie Sauro
Another one for the all ages set, Chicagoans Pelican make their way to Neumos for an all-instrumental doom metal throwdown. The four-piece is currently on tour in support of last year’s The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw, an ethereal yet gut-busting collection of gloomy, long-winded epics. Pelican avoids the pitfall that many instrumental rock bands find themselves in—that of monotony—by exploring different sounds and styles, not only churning out ear-piercing metal, but wandering into the ambient unknown on some of the trance-inducing longer tracks. They may look more like Vagrant emo kids than metal heads, and at times they may sound more charming than threatening, but Pelican will dispel all doubters when they take to the stage Saturday night.
