Rainer Maria – May 6, 2006 – The Paradox
by Katie Sauro
The New York transplants that comprise Rainer Maria have been around the block more than a few times—ten years, 5 albums, countless tours—but somehow they just keep going. It’s anyone’s guess how the hell they manage to, but let’s just be glad they do. Now in the midst of a U.S. tour, the trio brings its heart-rending power-pop to the all-ages crowd, landing in the heart of Ballard.
Their critically-adored albums balance gentle balladry, catchy pop, angry chick rock, and elegant poetry in the same vein as their namesake, and their latest full-length (and first in three years), Catastrophe Keeps Us Together, is no different. Unfortunately, their sound is oft-labeled as “emo,” but for those of you who haven’t heard Rainer Maria before, ignore all lame descriptions and see them for yourself.
