SECONDHANDHEROES
The Absence in Me
by Karla Ash
03.17.07

If secondhandheroes sound familiar, they should. No, it’s not that secondhandheroes has any local ties or college-radio veterans. It’s just that their sound - straightforward Big Guitar Rock with angst-ridden choruses about love lost and nearly lost - has been a staple of mainstream rock radio since the late ‘90s, when grunge stepped down from its throne and a new generation of kids wanted something that was sweet as well as sour. Nevertheless, secondhandheroes are better than their competition because these tunes really stick in the ear. “Cutting Away” and “So Many Little Times” grab on the first spin and after that it’s hard to keep the CD away from the stereo. Buy a copy for your little sister and hide your own underneath your bed if you’re too old.
