SFXSXSW: someone in the acronym department needs to be fired. Basically, it stands for San Francisco at South by Southwest (the festival in Austin). As you may be able to guess, it’s a compilation album showcasing the San Francisco bands playing the 2007 SXSW festival.
The album has a good mix of bands, most of them are pretty decent but not a lot of them shine. Most notable favorites for me were The Actual, Jason DEBO, Scissors for Lefty, Built for the Sea, Panda, and Maldroid.
The music on the disc ranges from simple acoustic to electronic danciness to even rap. Unfortunately, there’s a good bit of Dashboard Confessional-like pop music wannabe’s, but there’s enough originality to make up for it.
Not sure if this is even purchasable in stores, but if you can get it on the lower end of $10, it wouldn’t be a bad buy. It gives you a pretty good idea of the San Fran music scene and lets you know which bands you should probably check out. I’m not sure what SXSW was like this year, but considering this was San Fran alone, I’m guessing it was pretty good. |
