SHIM August 12 - The Crocodile - Seattle, WA by Ashley Graham 08.06.06 Every time Katie and I emerge from the doors of a SHIM show, I launch into a discussion of just why I like them so much. Now that she’s heard it a few times, it’s time to get my act together and get the words down on paper… er… on here. SHIM reminds me of high school, because, before falling head over heels for the Strokes, I, Ashley Graham, was totally a classic rocker. Need proof? I’ve seen Def Leppard, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Tom Petty, KISS (2), Van Halen, Sammy Hagar (3) and Aerosmith (2) all live in concert (with multiple times listed in parentheses). SHIM reminds me of this great love I once had in my life, and they reignite it. They don’t all quite look the part, but they play balls-to-the-wall, badass rock ’n’ roll, and I love it just about as much as I can love music. Frontman Ragan Crowe is all the proof you need. He stands on stage like a fucking rock star. He pounds his foot into the ground, he sneers, and he’s about as close to a rock god as you’ll get in a local music scene. Which is really what makes SHIM so great--they don’t belong on tiny stages. It’s arena rock but it’s at the Crocodile, and the High Dive, and even the Comet. It’s like watching something bigger than anything you’ve EVER SEEN, in your favorite venue. Perfection? Pretty damn close. SHIM’s a gem in the Seattle music scene, and if you haven’t caught them yet, here is a prime opportunity. Essential Info. The Venue: The Crocodile The Support: Memphis Radio Kings, Megasapien, New West Motels The Date: August 12 The Time: 9pm The Price: $5 The Catch: 21+ |
