PREVIEW
The Stills
The Showbox - October 8, 2006
by Katie Sauro
10.01.06

The Stills’ debut album,
Logic Will Break Your Heart, was released to resounding praise—acclaim that added them to the growing laundry list of Montreal-based bands (Wolf Parade, the Arcade Fire, Stars) making names for themselves in the indie rock community. Their low-key, somewhat gloomy songs turned the quintet into poster boys for “sensitive” rock, but not to be labeled as one-dimensional, they still brought crunchy guitars and up-tempo rhythms to their quaint vulnerability. The quintet’s new album, Without Feathers, travels in the completely opposite direction, toward catchier, more piano-driven pop, which can only serve to enhance their already-energetic sets. The change in style and sound has driven some fans of the first album off, but the fact that they’ve jumped from the tiny Crocodile to the Showbox in less than six months proves that, for the most part, their legions have remained loyal—and for good reason.
